How come my ping in video games stayed the same despite having a brand new fiber optic 1GB internet?

Main Post:

Today I tested my newly installed 1GB fiber optic internet and I got disappointed to see that the ping I had previously stayed the same as it was with my older much slower regular cable internet, how come? I thought that if the internet is much faster then it means the ping would get much smaller but in reality it stayed the same (about 80+-).

Top Comment: Gigabit is throughput, ping is response time. Response time is largely going to be related to your wired/wireless setup in the home and your geographical location in relation to the servers, which may be about the same as with the old ISP.

Why does watching Netflix increase video game ping so much?

Main Post:

At my house we have around a 200 mb/s download bandwidth. When I am playing CSGO I usually have around a 20ms ping but when my family starts watching Netflix that goes up to around 40ms. Supposedly streaming HD netflix only uses 5 mb/s. So why would this affect my ping?

It can depend on a few things. Based on the details provided:

  • The router (routing switch, if you want to get technical) may have QoS enabled (Quality of Service), which prioritizes what traffic gets more resources and throughput.
  • The router handling the increase in traffic, has less available resources (on-board RAM, CPU power) to dedicate to fast switching traffic. Unlikely depending on your hardware configuration (see below)
  • Routing rules and/or network configuration (topology and topography) don't switch traffic properly, adding delay to your traffic while Netflix is running. This is a general point relating to QoS and hardware configuration
  • Your router is not a routing switch but a hub instead. Topological hubs are inefficient as they do a form of round-robin network traffic management (i.e. one at a time). Topological switches allow concurrent traffic to run and run less impeded (i.e. all at once)
  • Overall network traffic has picked up, burdening the router with additional rules to manage traffic. Related again to QoS, Switch/hub configuration, and age of the equipment

A primary assumption is that you're using wired connections between all equipment. If anything you're using is on a wireless connection interfacing with wired connections/devices, then your speeds doubling in lag are likely due to the wireless connections. To my knowledge, wireless connections are still topological hubs that fake being switched connections really well. But, it can and does often show with enough attention and activity.

Hope that helps!

Private video call PING spikes & lag

Main Post:

Hello!

In the last 2 weeks I've been experience massive lag spikes from 60 ping to 300-500, which makes my private video calls very laggy.

I live in eastern Europe and my private call server is always eucentral. May this be an issue? How can I change it?

Top Comment:

This isn't normal, so I'd suggest flushing your DNS resolver cache. Make sure other programs or people aren't using too much of the internet either. You can also try lower quality or FPS for the video.

Bruce Lee didn't play ping pong with nun-chucks you numb-skull.

He didn't do this either, and neither did the guy in this commercial for

that matter. Bruce was dead long before those commercials were made.

This video says that enabling ipv6 made his ping drop to 60ms from 120ms, is it true?

It is shown in the solution part 2 that he enabled ipv6 and that made his ping significantly drop.

I have 200+ ping every night when I come home to play video games, and have had to restart my router on a daily basis for the last month

Main Post:

I don't know what's happening. I've been living at this place for almost a year, but only within the last months have I had consistent problems. I get home from work, and try to play a few games of Valorant. However, I have 200+ ping when I log on, and have to turn my router off & on to fix it. This process of waiting for my internet to reconnect and function takes 15+ minutes, and for the last few days I've spent over an hour resetting my internet because I can't stop lagging.

My landlord called my provider today and they apparently "reset" our internet, without ever making a trip to the house. When I logged online tonight, I had 400+ ping, twice as bad as before.

Does our internet plan just suck? Do we need a new router? I live one floor beneath the router, and have tried 2 different solutions - a wifi range extender, and a wall plug-in that connects directly to the router.

I am getting so frustrated, because this is how I try to unwind and destress after work, but I've been trying to play video games for the last 2 hours and can't because my internet connection just fucking sucks. Praying someone in this community can help.

Top Comment: Assuming the problem is on your entire network and not just your computer, then yes, the two most likely culprits are a shitty ISP and a bad router. If you have neighbors or something with the same ISP, you could see if they have the same issue. It is completely possible that they did reset your internet entirely remotely also, I wouldn't be skeptical of that. If you can try a different router then I'd give that a go. But again this is all assuming the problem is network wide and not just an issue with your PCs connection. If you're NOT positive that it's not just your PC, it could be a lot of different things. Could never hurt to start by using the Windows Network Troubleshooter. Also would be helpful to know if this only happens with Valorant, or is your entire connection bad? If it's just Valorant it could be an issue with your ISPs routing.

The high Ping Limit is fantastic, considering how great EFT servers are! 10/10
